Bend, county seat of Deschutes County, covers 32 square miles and is the most populated city in Central Oregon with a population of 70,328. At an elevation of 3,628 feet, Bend enjoys the predominately dry climate of the Great Basin Desert. The weather can be characterized by sunny days, cool nights and low humidity. To the west, Bend is surrounded by U.S. Forest Service land and to the east is high desert vegetation. The city is noted for its scenic setting, mild climate, year-round recreation opportunities and growing economy.
Bend is the outdoor recreation capitol of Oregon, with the Deschutes River running downtown and Mt. Bachelor minutes away. The recreational opportunities are abundant; everything from mountain biking, hiking, rafting, kayaking, golfing, fishing, rock climbing, camping, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, general sightseeing and much more.
Bend was originally called Farewell Bend and received its name because it was the last place pioneer travelers viewed the river before their journey over the Cascade Mountain Range. Farewell Bend has come a long way since settlers named the picturesque city in Central Oregon. The name was later changed simply to "Bend" by the U.S. Postmaster who felt the name was too long. Bend has grown from a simple lumber settlement, to the thriving and vibrant urban center it is today with a rich cultural life.
